Gearbox found to have caused Streatham Hill bus fire
It has taken a full investigation into the huge blaze which broke out in a Streatham Hill bus depot on the 20th of September to determine that it was caused by a faulty gearbox in the double decker bus.
The fire was started by the problem with the gearbox, spreading to the petrol tank as the bus parked up in the garage. This major fire which had engulfed the vehicle also caused three other buses to catch alight too.
Around 50 firefighters were required to take on the fire in the bus garage located at the top of Brixton Hill.
The ferocity of the flames meant that two of the buses were ruined completely, with a further two vehicles sustaining a lot of damage as the fire crews fought to ensure the blaze was brought under control.
It took over three hours before the fire was extinguished and the roof of the premises was said to have been badly damaged following this incident.
The inquiry into the blaze has now been completed by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) although the bus company Arriva is still in the process of carrying out its own investigation.
A spokeswoman for Arriva explained that there has been no decision made on the future of the bus depot and if it will be restored for future use.
